Antigua and Barbuda, along with other Caribbean nations, has called for increased support from the United States in combating the flow of illegal drugs through the region.

During a recent high-level meeting in the Bahamas, attended by US Vice President Kamala Harris, Cabinet spokesman Minister Melford Nicholas emphasized the need for greater collaboration and enhanced security measures at both US ports and Caribbean borders.

Minister Nicholas highlighted the ongoing efforts of Antigua and Barbuda in assisting the United States in stemming the entry of illegal substances into their country.

He stated that much of the drug interdiction on the high seas involves drugs originating from Latin America, destined for the US market, and that the Caribbean has long collaborated with the US to address this issue.

In response to the concerns raised by Antigua and Barbuda and other Caribbean leaders, Vice President Harris committed to appointing a special prosecutor in the United States to enhance the screening of cargo entering the Caribbean region.

This move is expected to bolster local efforts in preventing the illegal importation of drugs, which is believed to be fueling the rise in gun-related crimes in the country.

Minister Nicholas also acknowledged the challenges posed by Antigua and Barbuda’s porous borders, with numerous bays, inlets, and a thriving fishing industry that could potentially be exploited for illegal activities.

To address these vulnerabilities, the government is focusing on implementing improved border surveillance measures, including the acquisition of advanced equipment such as radar systems and increasing coastal patrols.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has already announced plans to acquire additional seacraft to strengthen border security.

Minister Nicholas emphasized the need for heightened awareness among the fishing community to prevent any facilitation of illegal cargo landing.
