In a solemn ceremony marking Remembrance Sunday, yesterday a number of diplomats, political leaders, and members of the armed forces gathered at the Cenotaph to honour the sacrifices of Antiguans and Barbudans who served in both World War I and World War II.

The annual commemoration, held on the Sunday preceding Remembrance Day, brought together Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, Foreign Minister Chet Greene, Senate President Alincia Williams-Grant, Senator Jonathan Joseph and various ambassadors and dignitaries who paid their respects to the veterans.

Attending his first Remembrance Sunday in Antigua and Barbuda, the newly appointed Resident British High Commissioner, John Hamilton, shared personal reflections on the day’s significance.

“My father was in the army, and I’ve been part of these ceremonies for all my life,” Hamilton said as he emphasised the importance of taking time to remember those who contributed to present-day freedoms.

Meanwhile Hilroy Johnson Browne, President of the Ex-Servicemen Association, highlighted the historical significance of the occasion, noting that soldiers from Antigua and Barbuda served in both World Wars.

The Ex-Servicemen Association encouraged citizens to continue supporting their cause by purchasing poppies on Remembrance Day itself, which falls today, November 11th.

The symbolic flowers help fund the organization’s ongoing work in supporting veterans and their families.
