Newly appointed Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries, and the Blue Economy, Anthony Smith said that he is embracing his new role, describing his first six weeks in office as both “remarkable and inspiring”.

MP Smith was sworn in as a government minister and member of Cabinet in mid-July, following his decision to quit the opposition UPP party and become an independent member of the House of Representatives.

The new minister has hit the ground running, meeting with top officials in the various departments and agencies under his portfolio, focusing on key areas such as food security, youth agricultural development, and the integration of modern technologies.

“Our youth are the future of this nation, and it is vital that we involve them in these initiatives,” he told Observer.

Smith has also participated in two regional events, attending the TT Agri-Expo in Trinidad from August 16-18, alongside Director of Agriculture Gregory Bailey.

The expo, themed “Farm to table: Revolutionising the local food supply chain,” provided valuable insights into agricultural innovation.

Earlier in August, Smith represented Antigua and Barbuda at the Caribbean Ministerial United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification Preparatory Conference in the Bahamas, emphasising the importance of sustainable land use for future generations.

The conference focused on critical issues such as drought and land degradation, preparing for the upcoming COP16 in Saudi Arabia.

The minister also expressed excitement about the opportunities for the blue economy, recognising the potential to harness marine resources for economic development, and highlighting the successful launch of an aquaponics farm at the National Vocational Centre for Persons Living with Disabilities.

“This initiative not only aims to bolster food security but also seeks to create economic opportunities for some of the most vulnerable members of society,” he said.

Smith added that coupling aquaculture with hydroponics fits into Antigua’s low rainfall, ecology, and limited land space, making it a great agro-business opportunity that young people should embrace.

He expressed hope to see similar programmes in schools to offer practical and economic skills to young people.

Minister Smith described his interactions thus far with his staff and technical advisors at the various ministries and departments as “warm”.

“The level of technical expertise and professionalism of the staff across all departments has truly demonstrated commitment to nation-building,” he said.

He added that his youthful energy, fresh perspectives, and managerial skillset had set the groundwork for transformative initiatives that will significantly benefit both his ministry and the public.
