While many of us were following the United States Election with mixed feelings, we still have so much unfinished business in our own country. Many of us are still reeling in shock over the recent murders in Antigua. In this small twin-island state, there is a lot going on, and feelings of shock, pain, anger and frustration are abundant.
We recently celebrated Antigua and Barbuda’s 43rd anniversary of Independence and it’s a perfect time to reflect deeply on the stirring words of the second verse of our national anthem. These words are a powerful call to action, not only for each citizen but also for our leaders, urging us to “raise the standard boldly” and answer the call of duty toward our country. How dutiful are we in protecting our elderly, our youth, our vulnerable? How dutiful are we in protecting our environment?
To our leaders, these lyrics remind us that true leadership is about sparing nothing and giving all. In every decision, every plan, and every policy, let us aim to uplift our people, invest in their potential, and inspire them to strive for a country free of fear, hate, and poverty. Let us build systems that empower and unify rather than divide, keeping in mind that our actions today shape the future our children will inherit. Our leaders must ensure there is access to all the basic human needs and that there is equitable access for those who do not wield much power, but depend on the gatekeepers of our resources to ensure that everyone gets their fair share of water, land, jobs, food, etc.
To the people of Antigua and Barbuda, this anniversary is a reminder of our collective strength and shared responsibility. Fighting each other is not the way to prosperity. We need to band together to stand up for what is right. Speak up when we see wrong and cooperate with each other. It calls us to confront and overcome obstacles — not just as individuals but as a united community. Each one of us has a role in this journey. Whether in small acts of kindness, community service, or simply in respecting one another, every action we take builds the peaceful, free society that our anthem envisions.
We must stand up against the crime that is rampant. We must promote positive education. We must encourage good health practices. We must help each other. We must be mindful of mental health. We must look after our youth.
As we celebrate 43 years of Independence, may we all “gird our loins and join the battle” for the nation we love. Let’s work tirelessly, each one striving, so that all may achieve. Together, we can continue to live in peace and harmony, where each person feels free and valued. Happy Independence, Antigua and Barbuda!
