The Leeward Islands Hurricanes maintained their perfect start to the West Indies Championship, defeating Jamaica Scorpions by five wickets at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Teenager Jewel Andrew starred with an unbeaten 62, including six fours and two sixes, guiding the Hurricanes to their target of 156. The 18-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, who now has five first-class fifties in 10 matches, formed a crucial 59-run partnership with Keacy Carty (34).

Earlier, Kadeem Henry contributed 25 before falling as the day’s first wicket. Marquino Mindley led the Scorpions’ bowling attack with figures of 2-32.

The victory came after the Hurricanes posted 335 in their first innings, highlighted by Jahmar Hamilton’s 93 and Karima Gore‘s 76, in response to Jamaica’s 320, where John Campbell scored 126 and Brad Barnes 63 as Jeremiah Louis picked up three for 44. The Scorpions managed 170 in their second innings thanks largely to the pace of Oshane Thomas and the guile of Skipper Rahkeem Cornwall who snared three wickets apiece. Campbell top-scored with 53 while the lower order contributed with the bat.

The Hurricanes will face Trinidad and Tobago Red Force at Warner Park in round three, while the Scorpions travel to Kensington Oval to meet Barbados Pride. Both matches begin February 12.
