A prominent figure in Antigua and Barbuda’s diplomatic community is advocating for establishing additional missions abroad to better showcase the twin-island nation’s unique qualities.
Dr. Dario Item, currently serving as the Ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda to Spain, the Principality of Monaco, the Principality of Liechtenstein, and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), has expressed this vision based on his extensive experience.
Since his appointment in 2016, Dr. Item has been dedicated to raising awareness of Antigua and Barbuda in various European nations. He discovered that many individuals were largely unfamiliar with the islands.
“When I mention Antigua and Barbuda, I often encounter a blank stare. Many people are blissfully unaware of not only our islands but also the vast potential they hold,” he remarked.
“Frankly, Antigua and Barbuda is almost unknown in numerous areas of the globe. As a result, individuals are missing out on incredible opportunities due to this lack of awareness about our stunning landscapes, investment prospects, and abundant potential,” Dr Item added
Over the years, Dr. Item has actively engaged in numerous initiatives to promote the country he serves.
A notable achievement is the establishment of an elegant embassy in Madrid, manned by a skilled team that has diligently worked to raise Antigua and Barbuda’s profile.
This team has also played a crucial role in supporting individuals who hold Antiguan and Barbudan citizenship, especially when they encounter challenges while living in Spain.
The embassy has been pivotal in fostering significant diplomatic connections with countries such as Spain, Monaco, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.
Through dedicated efforts to promote Antigua and Barbuda across Europe, he has successfully drawn in a diverse array of investors, tourists, and philanthropic donors, showcasing the nation’s beauty and potential.
“Having more embassies or consulates helps a country connect better with the local economy and culture. When a country has a physical presence, it can learn about the customs, habits, and needs of the local population. This understanding helps build trust, which is important for promoting a country’s services and attracting investors. For foreign investors, visiting an embassy feels more reassuring than meeting at a large event or an unknown hotel,” he said
Dr Item says although setting up a diplomatic mission requires significant investment, Antigua and Barbuda can expect a meaningful economic return in a short time due to the quality of services it can provide.
“I firmly believe that being an ambassador transcends merely holding a diplomatic passport. My goal is to harness my position to ensure Antigua and Barbuda maximizes its benefits, while also providing assistance to our citizens through the embassy in Spain,” Dr. Item emphasized passionately.
Dr. Item presented a compelling argument regarding the evolving nature of diplomacy in today’s world.
He acknowledged that a trend towards remote diplomacies has emerged, fueled by advancements in technology. However, he firmly believes that having diplomats physically present in the host country significantly enriches the understanding and insights into the local context.
While it may be feasible to gather information and assess a country remotely using modern tools, Dr. Item cautioned that the quality of such insights pales in comparison to the depth of understanding gained through on-the-ground experience.
He emphasized that simply consolidating and aggregating data is insufficient; a nuanced analysis of local developments is crucial for effective diplomacy.
Dr. Item noted that countries with a physical diplomatic presence are more likely to attract investments, giving them a significant competitive edge.
Moreover, he highlighted another vital advantage of having diplomats on the ground: cultivating extensive people-to-people relationships.
While modern communication methods such as phone calls, emails, and Zoom meetings facilitate ongoing contact, and air travel allows officials to fly in for essential meetings, these digital interactions cannot replicate the depth of relationships forged through consistent personal engagement and interaction.
In cultures like Antigua and Barbuda that continue to prioritize personal relationships as integral to business dealings, the benefits of informal gatherings often far exceed what can be accomplished through routine emails or phone conversations, he explained
Meanwhile, Dr Item continues to seek ways to bolster investments in the twin island nation further.
So far, he has made substantial investments in the country’s tourism sector, revitalizing it much-needed. His extensive network and relentless dedication have been key factors in the remarkable growth of this vital industry.
In addition to his contributions to tourism, Dr. Item has successfully attracted investors who have committed over $100 million to various real estate projects.
His initiatives have led to the establishment of numerous companies on the island, leasing office spaces, and creating valuable employment opportunities for the local communities.
`Thanks to Dr. Item’s efforts, Antigua and Barbuda boldly entered the digital age in February this year. Through his negotiations, the twin island nation secured the Google Street View project, becoming the first in the West Indies to achieve this milestone.
Remarkably, Antigua incurred no costs to access this cutting-edge technology, a testament to Ambassador Item’s skillful advocacy.
The benefits of Google Street View for Antigua and Barbuda are countless. It has enhanced tourism, global visibility, and economic growth.
This achievement is a game-changer, showcasing the islands internationally and opening new doors for opportunity and progress.
Since the project’s launch, more than 3 million individuals from around the globe have relied on the map to explore and discover various locations in Antigua and Barbuda.
But that’s not all.
A passionate advocate for sustainable tourism, Dr. Item has played a pivotal role in Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. His influence was instrumental in securing the country’s membership in the U.N. World Tourism Organization, a significant achievement for a nation that depends heavily on tourism for its economy.
Dr. Item, the esteemed Earl of Rothes and the Prince of St. Rosalie, recently received a distinguished honor medal from the Royal Corps of Nobility of the Principality of Asturias in Spain.
This prestigious award highlights his significant contributions and dedication to noble causes.
During the National Day celebrations in the enchanting Principality of Monaco, Ambassador Item had the extraordinary privilege of dining with Prince Albert himself.
This exceptional encounter, infused with royal charm and splendor, is a rare opportunity that many would deem a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It showcases the elegance and camaraderie of high society.
