The life of Tyrell Jacobs was cut short in the wee hours of Monday when the 31-year-old driver smashed his car into a utility pole on All Saints Road.
Jacobs of Swetes village was the driver of the Honda Civic car, A 20602 when he lost control the vehicle and crashed at approximately 12:50 am on Carnival Monday, while transporting two passengers to the city for the Carnival festivities.
He became the country’s fourth road fatality for 2017 when he was pronounced dead at the scene and his two passengers 20- year-old Shakeem Hughes of Swetes and 21-year-old Javonzo Joseph of All Saints were rushed to Mount St John’s Medical Centre. Police told OBSERVER media that Hughes was in critical condition at hospital.
The accident happened near Lics Limited. Rescue efforts were delayed because of the risk of electrical shock. Power was suspended in the area where the accident occurred as a precaution against emergency workers and members of the police force being electrocuted from fallen cables.
Workmen from the Antigua Public Utilities Authority were called out to remove power from the area since the impact of the crash knocked some utility lines loose.
