Jamaican swimming sensation Alia Atkinson claimed her eighth gold medal of the 2018 Short Course World Championships on Saturday when she claimed the 50-metre breaststroke in 28.95 seconds, leaving the field in her wake.
Atkinson’s day was made easier when her nemesis, Russia’s Yuliya Efimova, was disqualified for moving in her blocks, leaving the Jamaican by far and away, the quickest in the field.
In fact, Atkinson, the world record holder in the event, was the only swimmer to touch in under 30 seconds, with Australia’s Emily Seebohm, finishing in 30.25 seconds.
Efimova’s teammate, Vitalina Simonova was third in 31.11, Singapore’s Roanne Ho was fourth in 31.24.
Another Jamaican, Breanna Roman, was fifth in 31.41 seconds.
The rest of the field was rounded out by Singapore’s Christie Chue (31.79) and Hong Kong’s Hoi Kiu Lam (32.07).
On Friday, the 29-year-old Atkinson, showed once again why she is considered the short-course queen of the breaststroke, winning the 100 metre event in a fast 1:02.74, well clear of Efimova, who won the silver medal in 1:03.58.
Simonova won the bronze medal in 1:05.53.
Roman, finished sixth, touching in 1:07.64. (SportsMax)
