The Breast Friends Association received an inspiring donation of $3,920 on Monday morning from the students and staff of the Adele School, following a month-long pink lemonade fundraising initiative.
Throughout October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month, the special needs school organised weekly pink lemonade sales, extending beyond their initial Friday-only plan to accommodate growing local support. The creative fundraising approach resonated with both students and the wider community.
“I’m very happy to receive this donation from the Adele School,” said President Mrs Eunetta Bird, representing Breast Friends at the handover ceremony. “The Adele School is a school for special needs children, and just for them to come up with this idea to give back… it is such an amazing thing. I just want to compliment them for the effort that they’ve made throughout October.”
The initiative held particular significance for the school community, as Jamarie James, a special education teacher, explained that several staff members have been directly affected by breast cancer, either through personal diagnosis or through family members’ battles with the disease. The choice of pink lemonade for the fundraiser symbolically aligned with breast cancer awareness colours, demonstrating the school’s thoughtful approach to the cause.
Bird, herself a 26-year breast cancer survivor, emphasised that the disease “does not discriminate, whether you are healthy or not.”
The funds will support individuals struggling with the financial burden of treatment, which can be particularly challenging for many families.
The donation has showcased that even those in need can make meaningful contributions to community health initiatives, while teaching students valuable lessons about social responsibility and community service.
