The Community Development Division in the Ministry of Social Transformation and Human Resource Development will observe the first Centenarians Week in Antigua & Barbuda next week.
To mark the occasion, a number of activities have been planned for Tuesday, June 6 until Friday, June 9, the department said in a press release; June 8 has been earmarked Centenarians Day.
Interviews with some of the centenarians, addresses by government and ministry officials, presentations of gift baskets and the mounting of two billboards to highlight the oldest senior citizens on the island, are some of the activities planned.
Governor General Sir Rodney Williams or his deputy will also make visits to the centenarians.
To date, three males and 13 females comprise the 16 centenarians in Antigua & Barbuda. The oldest female is Lilian Edwards of Cassada Gardens who is 104 and the eldest male is Jacob Alexander Turner of Seatons, who is 103.
Over the years, the staff at the Community Development Division has collaborated with stakeholders to work with family members to plan birthday celebrations for these elderly members of the society.
The Community Development Division is commending those businesses that contribute towards making the centenarians’ birthday celebrations and this year’s week of activities a success.
