As the world marks International Human Rights Day, we celebrate the significant progress made in the Caribbean on decriminalization and legal advocacy, while acknowledging the critical work that is still needed to secure equality and dignity for LGBTQI+ individuals across the region.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a foundational document in the history of human and civil rights, charges nations to recognize all humans as being “born free and equal in dignity and rights” regardless of “nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status”.
CariFLAGS calls on our Governments and leaders to address the systemic barriers in healthcare, housing, and employment, as well as the entrenched homophobia and transphobia that remain at the forefront of the recognition of the human rights for the LGBTQI+ Community.
We urge our leaders to make the ‘rights step’, join us on the right side of history.
Support the legislative change by adding keywords to include our communities from discrimination in your constitutions, Decriminalize acts between consenting adults, Create inclusive policies and legislation to protect our communities.
On this International Human Rights Day, we reaffirm our commitment to the dignity, equality, and rights of LGBTQI+ persons across the Caribbean and celebrate our community, who despite the pervasive discrimination show up and have demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity.
Together, let us ensure that justice and equality are not ideals but realities for all people in the Caribbean. Together, let us build a Caribbean where everyone has the opportunity to realize the full enjoyment of their rights.
Equality is justice. Justice empowers us all. Empowerment strengthens humanity.
