The winners of the Big Ballorama Basketball Showdown slated for August 6 at the JSC Basketball Complex in Clare Hall will walk away EC $5,000 richer.
The competition, which is expected to host between eight to 10 of the country’s top teams will be played in a “win or go home” format and will carry the substantial payday, which is designed to bring some much needed attention to the sport here in Antigua.
This is according to one of the organisers of the event, Al Brodie, who told OBSERVER Sports that the initiative was put together by a group of Antiguan players living in the US after they realised that public support for the discipline was on the decline.
“Last year we had it around Independence but, this year, we felt that it would have been better to host it around Carnival time in light of the fact that a vast majority of visitors would be here on island,” Brodie said.
“We are really doing this in conjunction with the Basketball Association in an effort to bring back the type of interest that used to exist in the sport. So I am just encouraging the general public to come out and support the initiative and the teams who will be competing,” he added.
The one-day event is expected to shoot-off at 5 pm. Teams interested in taking part in the competition may contact Brodie at 772-5724.
