Students attending primary, secondary and tertiary institutions have an opportunity to win cash prizes on entering an essay-writing competition on the theme for this year’s Independence celebration.
On November 1, Antigua & Barbuda will celebrate its 35th Anniversary of Independence under the theme Building an Economic Powerhouse, Together – Antigua and Barbuda’s Independence 2016.
Minister of Trade, Commerce, Industry, Sports, Culture and National Festivals, E P Chet Greene said in a release that the main prize for the winning essay “will be EC $10,000 for students in secondary schools and colleges to include universities and other tertiary level institutions”.
“The Primary School category winner will receive a cash prize of EC $5,000 and prizes from partners of the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission.”
Meantime, the minister said that the theme is all-encompassing and solicits the participation of all citizens and residents, young and old, in transforming the nation into an engine of economic growth.
“This theme transcends all social, economic and political barriers and sets the foundation for us to achieve a vision which will see Antigua & Barbuda taking its rightful place at the forefront of nations within the region. This competition will give our school/college students a voice in how they see us making our country an economic powerhouse,” he said.
The competition will run until October 31 and entries can be delivered to the National Festivals Office on Market Street in St John’s or emailed to email@example.com
Entrees must be clearly marked with name, address and contact information of the author of the entry. Further information and rules for the competition can be obtained from the National Festivals Office Marketing Department at 462-4707.
