The newly elected councilman who amassed the most votes in the recently concluded Barbuda Local Government Elections said a desire to see change on the 62-square mile island was the motivation for him to enter the field of politics.
Kendra Beazer made history on Monday when he became the second person on the sister island to receive the highest votes in a council election after Bernhardt “Bernie” Newton who ran for the council in 2013.
The Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM) representative received 536 votes in the election which saw the Antigua & Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) maintaining control over the council with four elected seats as well as the MP for Barbuda.
Beazer said he entered the arena after he returned home from pursuing studies overseas, and realised that the opportunities for people like him were limited.
“I said to myself, ‘Kendra, unless people like you take a stand then others like you will continue to fall by the wayside’. I wanted to represent Barbuda at the highest level and to a level that the people deserve.”
While this was Beazer’s first time at the polls, he is no stranger to the field. His love for politics, he said, grew through the years of watching his father, Tyrone Beazer, serve as a former member of the council and in various other capacities.
