The United Progressive Party (UPP) has written to the University of the West Indies (UWI), seeking to discourage its involvement in the proposed University of Antigua campus at Five Islands.

UPP Leader, Harold Lovell told OBSERVER media yesterday that his party has written to Vice Chancellor of UWI Professor Sir Hillary Beckles, indicating it was opposed to the proposed move by the sitting government.

“We explained to him that we support the idea of a University of Antigua and its affiliation with UWI, however we were totally opposed to the proposed site at Five Islands School and we told him the school was purpose-built for the people in the communities in that area and we could not support the government depriving the children of that area,” he said.

Lovell said that Sir Hillary had responded indicating he would be willing to meet with the UPP next time he was in Antigua.

Additionally, Lovell said the UPP met with a representative of the Chinese government urging them to stop funding any project that would not be used for its intended purpose.
