PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, May 29, CMC – Police are investigating the murders of three people over the last weekend including a 62-year-old Guyanese woman who was hacked to death in an apartment in St. Helena, in Central Trinidad.
Police said that Enid Rosaline Periana was chopped to death on Friday night inside the apartment she shared with a 65-year-old man who, has gone since gone into hiding. The police have recovered a bloodstained cutlass.
In another incident, just over a month after he was acquitted of a murder charge, Nicholas ‘Ten Cents’ Fortune, 33, was shot many times at close range that his face was barely recognisable.
Fortune, who lived in Laventille, along the east-west corridor, had stopped at a bar in Barataria, east of here on Saturday night, when gunmen alighted from a vehicle and shot him dead.
Police are working on the theory that the killing may have been a reprisal. Fortune was acquitted of murdering Jayson ‘Irie’ Hoyte who was killed on January 6, 2008.
Meanwhile, a 40-year-old businessman was shot and killed by a gunman riding a bicycle on Sunday afternoon.
Police said that Joey Basdeo and his wife and four-year-old daughter were in a vehicle in Enterprise, Chaguanas, in Central Trinidad when the gunman rode alongside the car and opened fire at the driver’s side of the vehicle, hitting Basdeo several times. His daughter was grazed by a bullet while wife, Laura was not injured.
So far 215 people have been murdered here this year.
