ST JOHN’S, Antigua- Despite having to share points after their matches were abandoned on Tuesday due to rain, Caribbean Union Bank (CUB) Bethesda and Diamond’s International Police maintain their respective status as the number one and number two ranked teams in the Cool & Smooth ABCA Twenty20 Cricket Tournament.
Bethesda would have gone head-to-head with PIC Liberta in the feature game of a double-header, while Police would have faced Medpath New Winthorpes in the opening fixture but were all awarded a single point after a soaked pitch forced organisers to abandon the anticipated showdowns.
Bethesda, who top Group B, moved onto nine points after five matches, four victories and the lone draw, while Police top Group A with seven points five matches, three victories, a loss and a draw.
Liberta, one of the favourites to take the grand EC $20,000 winners prize up for grabs, moved onto six points as they occupy the number two spot in Group A, while New Winthorpes have five points in the number three position in Group B.
The teams finishing first and second overall will compete in the finals of the inaugural tournament set for Saturday at Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds.
Pigotts Crushers occupy the number two position in Group B with six points, while Cecil Charles Mahico are third in Group A with five points.
Bolans and All Saints have already been eliminated from Group A, while Scotiabank Empire and Jennings have been eliminated from Group B.
The competition continues Thursday when Pigotts Crushers take on Police at 4 pm and Bethesda play Mahico at 7:15 pm.
