  2. “Unlawful killing” ? Really Observer??? Who edits these articles?

    Editor’s note:
    Unlawful killing

In English law unlawful killing is a verdict that can be returned by an inquest in England and Wales when someone has been killed by one or several unknown persons. The verdict means that the killing was done without lawful excuse and in breach of criminal law. This includes murder, manslaughter, infanticide and causing death by dangerous driving. A verdict of unlawful killing generally leads to a police investigation, with the aim of gathering sufficient evidence to identify, charge and prosecute the culprit(s).

Mike, Killing someone out of hate or jealousy is unlawful; killing someone in self- defense is justification: The law allows a person to use deadly physical force in response to immediate threats to his or her life. But that is only if the person is being threatened and is seriously fearful that he or she is going to die if they don’t defend themselves ( It’s also justified if the killing was done in attempt to defend others).

  6. From as far back as I can remember, shanty town has been associated with carnival. However, the image of shanty town has not changed over the years. It is dirty, and it attracts all kind of people that leaves much to be desired.

I hold the opinion that that area used as shanty town needs to be cleaned up, with proper stalls placed there. The name can also change to reflect something more positive instead of a ghetto theme. And finally we can improve the lighting and security at the venue. This will ensure that any incidence of illegal activity is caught by the security and at the same time both the vendors, and patrons are kept safe.

This would be for the benefit of all and I’m sure the vendors would appreciate the improved appearance and the patrons would feel more secure and safe there. Remember that is not only Antiguans that will visit, but we also have individuals from other countries coming and judging what we put forward.

Condolence to the families involved in this incident.

  8. The argument to close down Shanti Town makes no sense since that is not the only place people are murdered senselessly.

A wife and mother was murdered in Heritage Quay brazenly in daylight. That is a commercial area with the police not too far away.

Unfortunately it was only a matter of time before an idiot decide to do something stupid to mar this thing they call carnival every year. Arguments over a few dollars and cents, women and all sorts of trivialities cause a lot of people to lose their lives. This is really getting ridiculous.

      • unlawful: it occurred as a deliberate act (murder)
lawful: It is recorded in statute as penalty for certain acts or in defense of one/other life (justified)

      • In Antigua it would be put to death by the courts, or a private citizen killing in self defense, or the killing of a person in the execution of the duties such as a police officer.

      • Who ever say killing is legal is a real big fool. How can killing be justified?.
yes there are people who provoke each other ,but one must realized that to control ones selves is another. why in the world should people take another life, reason , stupid ,evil , ungodly , and hatred .. Lawlessness is the order of the Day. if leaders can break the law of the Land so can other people .. The law is to up held ,but the people is in control, using it to do their dirty work.Police Lawyers , Government officials , and the list goes on.. A person who kiils another have a heart of stone..l a me say so..

  12. @why – Shanty Town has been part of the Antigua carnival landscape for as long as I can remember. It provides business opportunities to local vendors, and is a good liming spot. I love the fry chicken and the beer and the energy surrounding the place. Unfortunately we have the bad apples around us, and it is really sad that a man was stabbed to death there, but this is not a reason to close the place down.

    • No its not necessarily time to close the place down but these type of incidents have been going on for far too long now; it’s high time we do something about it.. Shanty town is located in the heart of East Bus Station, what if these guys had used guns instead of broken glass? Anyone of us could be idly passing by after enjoying a nice night out and then wind up on the cover of The Daily Observer. Furthermore it could have been one of our own children. We need proper lights, better stalls and more police officers in the area (plain clothes as well). The authorities’ presence in the area should surely help to reduce criminal activity. Shanty town has always been a problem area but the authorities still don’t see it fit to do something about it. Remember, prevention is better than cure.

        • @hmmmm when did you learn that??

And I wondering who is the “ideot” between you and “Labourite”?..did you not read “Labourite’s” last line yet you was “hooked line and suckered (sinker)”.

As “Anonymous” and many again would state “when did we all learned that no matter who in power crime will be there. so I ask you again when did you learn that crime will always be around? and you made all of us fall into “Labourites” apparent trap to “respond”…it seems they know our minds too eager to answer back.

Labourite apparently voted for ABLP with “propaganda” of “getting rid of crime” when they (ABLP) get into power and you, with Labourite, me, them and many etc voted for that but was stupid enough to do just that AGAIN.

          OUCH!
