A recently quashed proposal for a gun factory has prompted the country’s two opposition parties to demand full disclose from the government of Antigua & Barbuda of all Yida’s plans for its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and what, if any, more controversial proposals lie in wait.
The proposal by Yida International Investment (Antigua) Limited to allow an Italian firm to set up a gun manufacturing plant in its SEZ is met with widespread disapproval from the public.
Former senator and founding member of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Anthony Stuart declared, “It appears that the economic zone is being set up in secret.”
He referred to the fact that the gun factory proposal was reportedly discussed by the Cabinet but only came to the attention of the public when a letter from Yida International’s principal, Yida Zhang to an unnamed minister was leaked.
“The people should not know because somebody leaked it. Plans for what happens in the economic zone should be brought to the public. The prime minister must come and speak to us about the economic zone,” Stuart said.
