Antiguan sailor Karl James, like he has done many times before, dominated the Caribbean Laser Championships held in Orient Bay, St Maarten over the weekend, capturing the event in unpredictable conditions.
Sponsored by Budget Marine, James beat out Benoit Maesemaker of St Barths and his countryman Jules Mitchell to take top honours. James and Maesemaker had been almost even on points at the end of sailing on Saturday but the heavier winds on Sunday gave the Antiguan the chance to forge ahead.
The winds were around 14 knots on Saturday and increased to 20 knots on Sunday.
Besides being the leading chandlery chain in the Caribbean, the Budget Marine sponsorship of James was provided with particular enthusiasm given the role James has played in youth development in Antigua and his contribution to the growth of the sport in which he has been active for 24 years.
A total of 14 boats competed in the championships.
