Two officials from the United States are in Antigua talking with the government in a bid to speed up the extradition of fraud-accused Leroy King, the former administrator of the Financial Services Regulatory Commission (FSRC).
King is wanted in the US on 10 charges of wire, mail and securities fraud and money laundering among other offences linked to the R Allen Stanford US $7 billion Ponzi scheme for which Stanford is currently serving 110 years in jail.
Top government officials who spoke to OBSERVER media on condition of anonymity yesterday, said one official from the US Embassy and a US Marshal arrived in Antigua this week and they met with the Attorney General Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, other government officials and The Director of Public Prosecutions Anthony Armstrong.
Some senior local police were also said to have been informed of the visit and deliberations.
Efforts to reach Benjamin and Armstrong for comment yesterday were unsuccessful. Sources told our newsroom they were both locked in a meeting with the officials whose trip was “clearly to arrange” King’s return to the US “soonest” if not “immediately with them”.
