Government’s Chief of Staff Lionel “Max” Hurst said officials at the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHAPA) have accused a former minister in the United Progressive Party administration of larceny of funds.
Hurst made the allegations public in his circulated notes from last Friday’s Cabinet session.
The chief of staff said CHAPA representatives, who gave a report, claim that the auditing of the body’s books came to a halt because financial records have “disappeared”, with the last audit being completed in 2016 for 2006.
According to Hurst, the CHAPA reps said, “authorities from the previous administration absconded with CHAPA’s records. In fact, when several houses built at Follies were sold, the monies were transferred directly to (a) previous minister in the UPP administration.”
While the notes did not identify the minister, or include proof of the allegations, Hurst said the authority’s representatives were also unable to explain why the transfer took place.
Meantime the 68-year-old body has also reported problems collecting monies owed by delinquent individuals.
According to the report, the body has sold land valued at $48 million and about $12 million, remains unpaid for 90 days or more.
