President of the Antigua & Barbuda Cricket Association (ABCA) Leon Rodney, on Tuesday, confirmed the acceptance of two new clubs into the country’s First Class cricket competition ahead of the 2017 season.

The acceptance of Pigotts Crushers and Rising Sun Cricket Club comes just days after the Cricket Association announced it would stay with the original round-robin format for the upcoming season, forgoing plans to introduce a new “Jumbo Cricket” format that would have seen teams playing various formats of the game in a single league.

“We would have given permission to two teams to be a part of the 2017 tournament so that will go ahead. We are just finalising the fixtures but there is a lot of cricket taking place. We have to find a slot for the Cool & Smooth T20 and things like that so they are just making the final preparations to the fixtures, which you will have pretty shortly,” he said.

The season, projected to start next month, will open with another installment of the 9s tournament, a competition that, according to Rodney, has become quite popular amongst players.
