Amid concern from residents, the Director of the National Office of Disaster Services Philmore Mullin has said that the cluster of earthquakes residents have felt since midnight is not unusual.
Five quakes struck about 74 kilometres off Barbuda, according to the Facebook page of the UWI Seismic Research Unit in Trinidad.
The strongest tremor had a magnitude of 5.8 and many residents say it shook them out of their sleep.
Mullin says he understands the public’s concern but is reminding that the country is in an earthquake zone.

Mullin says tsunamis are also a reality for Antigua and Barbuda.

The head of the National Officer of Disaster Services says the Multi-hazard warning system for the country is still a work in progress.

Mullin says there is no way to warn residents of an earthquake.
