Four baggage handlers who work at the VC Bird International Airport are suspected to be involved in the smuggling of over 30 pounds of cocaine on a Jet Blue flight during the Christmas holidays.
The men, whose names are withheld since they have not been charged, were detained at Police Headquarters for about 48 hours – Wednesday to early Friday – and were released pending further investigations.
Sources at the airport told OBSERVER media the smuggling incident allegedly occurred on December 29, 2016 and the Class A substance was intercepted when the plane landed at the JFK international Airport in New York that day.
Details about what happened in the US subsequent to the drug seizure were unknown up to press time. It is not known whether anyone was arrested there.
The incident has reportedly resulted in the implementation of new security measures. Airport sources said no internal action has been taken against the Antigua & Barbuda Airport Authority (ABAA) baggage handlers who police had in their custody.
